Artist Ancestors

IMG_1049My great-great grandmother, Maria Elizabeth Smith Fernald, painted this landscape on Mt. Desert Island, Maine. It is an oil painting, 27″ x 37.” It was painted in the style of the “Hudson River” school sometime between 1860 and 1875. Fredric Edwin Church and several other “Luminist” artists were painting on Mt. Desert Island during that time. I don’t know whether she studied with any of them but she was clearly influenced by their work.

These are two watercolors painted at Fernald Cove, Mt. Desert Island, by my great grandmother, Minna Rose Simon Fernald. The first one is of the causeway at the head of Fernald Cove. The second is a view of Somes Sound.

Minna Paintings_0002This watercolor was also painted by my great grandmother. It is of my grandfather as a boy on Fernald Point, Mt. Desert Island. Painted around 1904.

These are two oil paintings by my great aunt, Helen Elizabeth Fernald. The first one is a view of the head of Fernald Cove and the second my have been painted near Southwest Harbor, Maine, a short distance from Fernald Cove and Fernald Point.

I grew up going to Mt. Desert Island in the summers. These views are dear to my heart. I feel very fortunate to have grown up surrounded by the paintings of my ancestors and to have an extensive collection of their paintings in my home today!
