"To see is to draw — seeing is to drawing what reading is to writing."

"In art one has to learn to see, as in music one has to learn to hear."
~Stevens

Students begin their training by drawing from classical casts. Using pencil and charcoal, students will learn to understand the workings of the visual world — to render it truthfully and accurately.

Students will be introduced to the vocabulary or "grammar" of classical drawing and painting. Terms such as "visual order," "value relationships," "lost and found edges" and "arabesque" are some examples of the language used to communicate ideas in classical drawing and painting.

Students will be taught to cultivate the concept of "seeing big," to keep in mind the consideration of the whole while working. Elements of color, design and composition essential to the making of beautiful pictures will be presented to students through discussions and one on one critiques.

During the course of training, students will progress from cast drawing to figure drawing, still life, figure and portrait painting. Students will be instructed to supplement their studio experience by studying the work and writings of the masters. A list of books and articles recommended for study will be supplied.
